An alphabetical catalogue of the books in the library of Rainham Hall [manuscript], Norfolk, England, between 1750 and 1764.

Manuscript catalog in ink in at least two neat old hands. Part I of the catalog (p. [1]-[120]) lists books arranged alphabetically by author or title, followed by a shelf mark; only author and title information is given, and entries are written on rectos of leaves only, with versos reserved for additions or other notes. Part II (p. [121]-[167]), entitled "A numerical catalogue of the books in the Rainham library being a duplicate of the alphabetical catalogue foregoing," lists books according to local shelf mark and classification scheme using letters of the alphabet and numbers.

Charles Townshend, 3rd Viscount Townshend, was the son of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend (1674-1738), English statesman, and grandson of Sir Horatio Townshend, Bart. (c. 1630-1687), a zealous supporter of Charles II, who was created Baron Townshend in 1661 and Viscount Townshend of Raynham in 1682. The old Norfolk family of Townshend, to which he belonged, is descended from Sir Roger Townshend (d. 1493) of Raynham, who acted as legal adviser to the Paston family, and was made a justic...
